power of words.

a SUNFLOWER.
what comes to your mind? let me see, yellow petals, a green stalk with big leafy leaves, and a brown-blackish centre. a sweet girly thing isn't it?
how about, a RAINBOW?
hmm, a seven-coloured bow, pretty in the sky. awesome sight!
now how about, UGLY. or maybe, WHY AREN'T YOU AS GOOD AS HIM/HER.
i wonder what impressions are formed in your mind. hmm.
i really learnt about the power of words during two lectures in SERVE, and how certain words have already subconciously formed certain specific impressions in our minds. (can you imagine what forms in the mind of a child, when the parent scolds, YOU ARE SO STUPID WHY CAN'T YOU EAT YOUR FOOD PROPERLY or something.) and these lessons have come to my mind lately, as, well, i experienced something interesting in my life!
well, there was this once, i got so sick - and i really mean it - just sick in the gut because of people telling me how aunty i am and look, how blahblahblah. and blah. i got horrendously tired of such things, because it makes me feel how insufficient i am compared to the rest of the world. always needing and striving to look pretty and trendy seemingly are so important to people, which i won't deny they are in reality. but, it is just too tiring. and disgusting. have you experience this exasperation before?
well, of course i got over this stage of feeling incompetent, because i know my value is not of such things, instead, i know of God who loves me just the way i am, not looking at the way i dress or how capable i am, what i can do and what i can't do. and that i'm already grateful for the things God has alrdy provided for me - the clothes i have, the bag i carry, the gifts He gave - these truly are sufficient. besides, i do know they are just joking, even though subconciously it did affect me. but, the point that i want to bring up is, what if the person you're saying unedifying words of any kind to, does not have assurance in Jesus? even though, you meant it as a joke? how would he or she feel?
Like the impact of parents saying to a child "stupid", we must realise the impact of our words. I too, must admit, that sometimes my words aren't edifying, and we all need the transforming power of God to be more Christ-like each day. just as paul says to edify one another in 1 Thess 5:11, so shall we all aim to speak forth words that will not destroy others, but to build each other up.
whee, just a rant much needed.

Westside Anglican Church presents a light-hearted play…
It's easy to get know what's important.
But it's difficult to know WHO is.
Don't get lost in the crowd.
Angels, mortals, and someone else.

choices
janice jotted on Wednesday, March 21, 2007 @ 7:07 PM
at points where you are at the crossroad,
think of the choices that you have to make.
it may seen logical and easy at this point in time,
but 10 years down the road,
you look back and wished that you had made a better choice.
dont make regrets happen by choosing wisely
because it really hurts when you realise your folly a second late.

willing yourself to do something which you would prefer not to
that is part of what 'discipline' is
i feel like im running away from what God is asking me to do
it is so clear cut
but im like a spoilt little kid that goes shaking her head in rebellion, shutting her ears with her hands
and shouting at the top of her voice 'i dont want to hear it! i dont want to hear it!'
A different side of Singaporeans...

It was like any other usual day... I travelled to school by train and I was sitting in front of this guy who was reading his newspaper.. Then this other guy came to sit beside him, busy looking into the guy's newspaper.. Like any other Singaporean (at least not for me cuz i dun really read newspaper in public) they would 'siam' and dun allow anybody to read... But these two strangers shared to read the newspaper together! Each guy holding each side of the paper, and when they want to flip, they ask each other for permission... I was quite amused...
In the evening when i went to have dinner wif my family, i met this guy who came back juz to pay his bills cuz he left without paying the previous time... That's really a very honest act i can say, the sum of money i saw was definately more that 50bucks... That guy keep apologizing, the owner of the 'zhi char' stall keep saying it's ok and said sorry in return too... It's this kind of 'zhi char' stall that attracts loyal customer as well.... Another act of Singaporean which impressed me!

one day
janice jotted on Monday, March 05, 2007 @ 12:14 AM
time flies and everyone has grown.
im turning 20, eunice finished her A levels and becky is in her last year.
it seems as though the days just went by in a blink of the eye.
cant really remember how it was like to be 10 years old.
as reality steps in and you get more concerned about things like what adults always do,
it made me realise that unless we are guided by God on a daily basis
and unless our focus is on Him, His plans and His promises,
we will be just like any other people walking along the street,
being sucked into the world
and being carried along by its fury.
and then you wouldnt even realise that another day has just passed..
what kind of life should we lead?

i've got a couple of things to write about, but i haven't really thought through them. Like, how am i going to express these thoughts. and i'm lazy to think. haha!
in any case, the thoughts run from how there is an increase in the number of mentally unstable people i meet nowadays (makes me wonder if there really is an increase in the numbers in Singapore, or it just always has been like this. rather disheartening i must say, so many pple losing their sanity perhaps because of the things they've gone thru, when all they could have done is to really know the Lord. yeah.. and they are really scary to me. as in, not a despising kind of scary, but really scary feeling. like, the unknown or something.), to how those adolescents who aren't the typical mainstream kind (but then again, what is considered mainstream. hmm.) (i noticed that actually in some of them, they really are fearful and insecure huh. going against rules, dressing and all those stuff. just fades away.. a facade or something.), and also to watching sad love dramas (i was pondering on the aegean sea show on saturday afternoons at 2pm which has sappy heart wrenching plots of how this girl likes this guy but the guy is forced to marry another girl. you know, those kind. and the girl looks at the guy longingly..... craving and screaming out for his attention by standing at one corner looking so sad. hmm, i wonder if we, the viewers, by watching these kinds of show end up craving for that craving for another's attention. do you get what i mean? hahaha! i don't know, it's that gut writhing feeling. mm!).
ah, that's a load off my mind, but i know it's very difficult to read huh. those parenthesis makes it all so confusing, but it's alright if you don't get it! wheeeee i blog to relieve my pondering mind. except for one thing, which i really would like to write about it in a nicer way..
Lose calories...
Becky jotted on Saturday, March 03, 2007 @ 10:18 PM
Woke up at 6am this morning to go help out in Girl's Brigade. Was literally dragging myself out of the bed, had barely only an hour of sleep... Had lotsa fun wif the girls at Macritchie though!
They are super cute lah, especially when they grumble... I feel so old wif them, they are full of energy... i'm the one complaining to them before they even start... I think it's also partly cuz of not exercising regularly or can say nv at all unless there is games day, which causes my lousy stamina... When Kai Lun ask me how i feel after the 3km walk, i said that i felt that my muscles are growing and of course i lose calories! A sense of satisfaction=) Got chance i'll go again... Wif my two happy friends?
Anyway, i promise Eunice, Jasmine (haven told phoebe and mich yet) that i'll cook for them to celebrate cuz they scored really well for their 'A's.. Really happy for them... Praise God! If you happen to read the blog, tell me what you'll want on the menu please...
